With cross-border trucking, trust in the carrier and logistics provider is essential. Without the right partner, your freight could end up stuck at the border — or in the hands of U.S. Customs and Border Protection, which, for example, on Aug. 1 seized more than 3,400 pounds of meth in a truckload of lettuce at the Pharr International Bridge in Texas.
Of course, drug trafficking is an extreme example of the importance in choosing the right partner to handle cross-border shipping. Still, collaboration among shippers, carriers, and logistics providers is critical for navigating the complexities of cross-border trucking.
The Growing Need for Cross-Border Trucking
Nearshoring, the relocation of manufacturing operations from Asia to North America, is a growing trend spurred by factors including tariffs on Chinese goods and supply chain disruptions during the COVID-19 pandemic. Amped-up manufacturing in Mexico, in particular, has increased the demand for cross-border trucking.
Chinese companies now represent the fastest growing source of foreign investment in Mexico, according to Splash 24/7, which said that investment “predominantly targets the manufacturing sector, encompassing projects ranging from computer equipment such as Lenovo’s mega site investment in Mexico on computer, server and computer rack assembly, construction equipment led by Lingong Heavy Machinery, furniture led by Man Wah, and electric vehicles with VUD and Chery making massive investments.”
The value of all goods imported to the United States from Mexico hit more than $475 billion in 2023 and is forecast to increase by 30-40% over the next five years, according to Food Logistics. U.S. imports from Canada reached nearly $430 billion last year, while U.S. exports to Canada were valued at more than $352 billion.
The top three truck commodities at the U.S.-Canada border are computers and parts, vehicles and parts, and electrical machinery. Electrical machinery is in the top spot at the U.S.-Mexico border, followed by computers and parts and vehicles and parts.
The busiest truck crossings between the United States and Canada are Detroit and Port Huron, Michigan, and Buffalo, New York. The busiest ports of entry at the southern border are Laredo and El Paso, Texas, and Otay Mesa, California.
Cross-border trucking from Mexico is also expected to increase as a result of growth at the Port of Manzanillo, where International Container Services Inc. is spending $300 million to boost capacity at its terminal from 1.4 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) to 2 million TEUs.
In fact, Peter Sand, chief analyst for Xeneta, told Splash that he believes more containers from China could be imported to Mexico than the U.S. West Coast by 2031.
Choosing Between Cross-Border Trucking Companies
Cargo security is not the only concern with cross-border trucking. Other challenges include the complex regulatory requirements and border procedures. Shippers should trust their cross-border freight to logistics providers that thoroughly vet trucking carriers, build long-term relationships with them, and have extensive experience and expertise in cross-border movements.
Experience and Expertise in Cross-Border Transportation
U.S.-Mexico capacity is available, according to SupplyChainBrain, which said this past spring that “even with the exit of some independent freight operators from the market during the pandemic, there’s approximately 18% more truck capacity now than was present when COVID-19 hit.”
When considering that capacity, look at logistics providers’ and carriers’ infrastructure and capabilities on both sides of the border, including the ability to leverage cross-dock facilities. Make sure the provider can scale with you as your business grows.
Carrier partners and logistics providers must have regulatory knowledge of cross-border trucking rules in North America. They also should be certified through the Customs Trade Partnership Against Terrorism (CTPAT) and have access to the Free and Secure Trade (FAST) lanes for efficient and secure cross-border movement.
“Not all freight transportation providers are equal, and only some have the necessary expertise and accreditations to execute seamless cross-border movement of goods,” a Manufacturing Tomorrow article said. “Look for carriers that employ their own experienced professionals to ensure the safety and security of your cargo throughout the shipping process.”
Cross-Border Safety and Security Measures
Cross-border trucking requires stringent safety measures, security protocols, and additional training.
- Evaluate the carrier’s commitment to safety through its accident history and insurance coverage.
- Discuss security measures taken to prevent cargo theft and tampering.
- Ensure technology is utilized as a security tool.
Technology Integration to Streamline Cross-Border Trucking
In addition to security, technology is essential to streamline cross-border trucking operations. Necessary technology provides real-time tracking and visibility, automation, and data analytics.
- The transparency provided by real-time tracking heightens the efficiency of cross-border movements.
- Technology can prevent delays and improve communication.
- Automation streamlines complicated cross-border documentation and compliance processes.
- The use of data analytics can help foresee and mitigate potential disruptions.
Flexible and Comprehensive Cross-Border Services
Carriers and logistics providers must offer flexible and comprehensive cross-border services in order to build long-term partnerships. That includes offering multiple modes of transportation and customized solutions.
- There are distinct advantages to working with a provider offering a range of transportation solutions, including dry vans, flatbeds, and cargo vans.
- There are huge benefits to working with a provider that has access to intermodal, transloading, and brokerage services.
- It is vital to work with a transportation partner that can provide tailored shipping solutions to meet a wide variety of needs.
- Flexibility and capacity are particularly crucial for handling frequent and expedited deliveries.
